Midwife Profile — Colleen Forbes

[Colleen Forbes holding baby]

I am the primary midwife of Midwifery Care. I am assisted by a qualified assistant at each birth. In addition, I believe strongly in the apprenticeship model of education and strive to include student midwives when appropriate.

I myself am an apprentice-trained midwife. After a 4 year apprenticeship, I joined forces with my midwife and mentor in a very rewarding practice. Since 2002 I have been in independent practice as an Oregon Licensed Midwife and a NARM Certified Professional Midwife.

My passion for midwifery began in 1993 with an introduction to feminist women's health care and the sense of empowerment inherent in making informed choices about our bodies. I carried this passion to Honduras where I served two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer, teaching life skills, sexuality education and positive discipline. In my spare time I tagged along with local midwives.

In 1998 my daughter Lucy was born at home into the loving hands of her Papa and midwife. Shortly thereafter I began my apprenticeship and experienced the joy and reward of sitting with women as they labored. I continued my studies with a two week intensive in a Jamaican hospital.

Upon my return from Jamaica my son Harper was conceived. Harper was born in November of 2001, also at home with my husband and midwife/mentor by my side.

Besides the time spent in direct service to women, I teach a holistic childbirth preparation class for home and birth center, speak regularly to university students about midwifery and am an active member of the Oregon Midwifery Council.

Eventually everyone needs to relax and rejuvenate. For this I have my garden. I am an avid perennial gardener and find great comfort and pleasure in creating a landscape that is a haven for all in my family. My spirit is renewed by my contact with the earth and all that flourishes here.

Yoga too, is an important part of my life. I find my practice helps me stay present through the demands of daily life and experience more joy and less suffering despite the ups and downs. Besides, it keeps my body strong and supple for all that labor support!

I could not be the successful midwife I am without the constant support and patience of my husband Mike. Despite the demands of his own career in organic produce he always seems to be available when the phone call comes, and when I return home tired and hungry.

I am passionate about my work as a midwife and am eternally grateful to all the women and families who have shared this most amazing event with me.
